The chorus for Ajmal Kasab

Admist a lot of fanfare and revelry recently was Kasab's hanging celebrated. The celebration of sending the lone 26/11 surviving terrorist to the gallows. Thought that celebrating the loss of life was a characteristic of the more uneducated, intolerant and belligerent of the Pakistanis. A little amazed to see its prevalence with relatively educated and self proclaimed responsible Indians.
For me personally, Kasab's execution means nothing. Neither in terms of revenge nor in terms of decisiveness and justice. It also helps one understand how the media manipulates to build onto a public view convenient to their interest. Since Kasab's arrest the media has widely been reporting his perverse behaviour . We've been told that Kasab would settle for nothing less than the glutinous kebabs for lunch and dinner. He has no remorse whatsoever and has said if given a chance he would repeat what he did on the night of 26/11. But when you watch his interrogation videos shot immediately after his capture on 26/11 (available on youtube), not only is he willfully cooperating with the interrogators but is shameful and gutted at what he's ended up doing at the behest of money and misinterpretation of religion. " Allah mujhe kabhi maaf nahin karega" are his words as he breaks down frequently during the interrogation. This is also substantiated by what is now being reported in the media. Among his last words were "Allah kasam, maaf kar do. aisi galti dobara nahin hogi". But the negative reporting in the media made sure that those who would have given mercy a thought, since Kasab was nothing more than an indoctrinated 21 year old foot soldier available in plenty in the destitute villages of Sindh and the Punjab in Pakistan and not a mastermind, were never really given a chance.
I personally feel he should have been allowed to live. A life behind the bars but perhaps, as per the correct interpretation of his own religion. If he could be indoctrinated into being a killing machine, he could certainly be doctrinated back into following the righteous path set by 'God' which he was told he was following earlier, or atleast could have tried to, especially when he was showing signs of remorse and regret.
I'am aware that a lot of people argue that crores of rupees have been spent to keep him alive. But then, ofcourse Indians had to. He indeed was a prize catch and his capture had led us to every minute details of the attack which otherwise might not have been possible.
There was another argument that Kasab must be hanged at the earliest as his accomplices in Pakistan could kidnap, hijack plane, buses, VIP's etc. to have him released out of prison. Now people who argue this are not only poorly read but lack common sense too. Was Kasab the mastermind of the attacks? Their Leader? The insinuator? No, he was just another sacrificial lamb manipulated and programmed by his masters to carry out their orders who claim to be following the Holy Quran by killing innocent and unarmed civilians. There are scores of such sacrificial lambs readily available in Pakistan, who primarily due to their extremely poor economic conditions have been indoctrinated or are being indoctrinated with misinterpreted versions of the Holy Quran. Would the leaders of these terrorist outfits based in Pakistan then, take a risk of enormous proportions to kidnap or hijack only to get someone released who's replacement is readily available back at home?
Another theory that had been doing the rounds prior to his execution was that he may never be hanged due to the minority vote bank politics of the Congress Party. Now this absurd theory could well have been propagated by the ruling party themselves. Notwithstanding the pictorial evidence against Kasab, the fact that he was not an Indian but a Pakistani, no muslic cleric, individual, imam or Islamic organisation would vouch for his innocence or indicate that he may have been falsely implicated. The Muslims of  Pakistan are not the vote bank of the cult to which parties such as Congress, Samajwadi Party belong. Though has it been an Indian muslim who would have been implicated, things could have been a lot different. Prima Facie example is the Batla House encounter in New Delhi.
Therefore by executing the hanging of Kasab, Congress would now want to be seen as having got a better of BJP which keeps accusing it of vote bank politics and minority appeasement.
Having read extensively on the subject and having seen what had been going on, i get a sense that India and Pakistan have come to an unconventional, unofficial, back door deal or an understanding wherein India would look beyond 26/11 (statements in the media notwithstanding) in which Pakistan's senior intelligence and army officials are known to be involved, acting against whom would be very embarrassing for the Pakistan Government. In return, Pakistan would limit its use of proxies against India and Indian investments and interests in foreign land, such as in Afghanistan and would try to dismantle infrastructure and sanctuaries aimed at another 26/11 styled attack on Indian soil. Though their support for the freedom for Kashmir from the Indian occupation shall continue. This for India, could prove to be playing with fire for several reasons. One, the above back door deal may not have a unanimous approval of the top brass of ISI and the Pakistani army. Secondly elections are due in Pakistan next year and all such understanding may fall flat on its face with a change in government. Thirdly, Pakistan is well known for not keeping its promises and is a serial promise offender. In such a case, sooner or later, the demand for justice for 26/11 too could vanish in thin air, just as the demand for 93 blasts in Mumbai have, thanks to a continual use of extremism as a tool of their foreign policy.
The urgency and swiftness with which the Indian Government has carried out the execution of Kasab, gives strength to the above argument. It was earlier this year when Pakistan had sent its judicial commission to collect certain evidence and cross examine the witnesses for its 26/11 trial in an anti terrorism court in Pakistan. The Indian Government didnot allow the judicial commission to cross examine the witnesses then, which resulted in quashing of case against the 26/11 accused in the Pakistani court. Now, after the hanging of Kasab, India has invited the Pakistani judicial commission again to cross examine the witnesses so that the trial in the Pakistani court can proceed. But with Kasab now dead, a major witness has been eliminated who's statement could have gone a long way in convicting all the accused in Pakistan.

FIVE : PAN SHORES

THERE'S NO OTHER COUNTRY MORE INDIAN THAN PAKISTAN.
My adulation of Pakistan stems from the my ancestral roots in Sialkot Punjab,(Pakistan)
All speak Punjabi.
Eat the same food.
Have similar rituals.
N i love wearing those long kurtas and those lovely pyjamas..
My maiden trip to Pakistan is certainly on priority.

Afghanistan is one of biggest inspiration for me. I've been fortunate to be a part of UNHRC/CIP sponsored periodic surveys and reports on Afghanistan. It's a country where nothing comes easy, not even a night's sleep. Of the few educated Afghans i met in Dubai and other Persian Gulf regions, i remember the vignettes of a certain teary eyed individual and what he said. THE ONE WHO CAN FIGHT, CAN MAKE IT THROUGH ANOTHER NIGHT.

There's a lot more to Israel than just hostilities.(though i love it for that part...convoys, arms, cops, all out on streets). I've loved my obsessive time in Israel. On sides of its borders with enraging enimosity in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria to Tel Aviv, Haifa, Nazareth, Jerusalem, Dead Sea and others.  It's been brilliant. HEART FOR ISRAEL.

If there's a country i'd like to see myself professionally ascensioned, it has to be Singapore. I simply love the island. Everything about it. I love those long walks, long empty drives, the night safaris, the sentosa casinos, the people, and ofcourse, Sembawang!

Hate it or love it. United States is by some distance, the greatest nation on earth. The landscape, the people, life, there is hardly anyone.anything better than it. Wish Indians can learn being more cheerful and smiling and large hearted from the Americans, apart from the other non sense that certain Indians keep aping. East coast is rocking, west coast is madness, and hawaii is elevating...

FIVE : IMITATION OF LIFE

Michael Stipe, face of innocence and voice of an appositely genteel American.
Rockstar??? really???.....Hell Ya!
R.E.M, must go down as the perpetrators of Alternate Rock genre, so to speak.. It's a shame, they, like a lot other predominantly American bands, called it a day last year...Stipe, your intricate vocals shall thou be missed!

Tell me i'm the anchor of my own ascension...
Tell me i'm the tourist in the 4th dimension...
                                                     ........work it out.......

                               I can't believe that i believed i wished
                               that you could see...
There's a new planet in the solar system...
There is nothing up my sleeve...

                                              party to party
                                              you've been looking
but your search will never end
                                              you've been hanging
                                              with the wrong crowd
you've got all the right friends

                                               This lightening storm..
                                               This tidal wave
                                               This avalanche..I'm not afraid..
C'mon...c'mon no one can see you try...

Your eyes are burning holes through me..
                                        I'm gasoline...
                                        I'm burning clean..
                                        you are the star tonight..
                                        you shine electric outta sight..
your light eclipsed the moon tonight...
                                        electrolite

FIVE : WAY ON DOWNSOUTH LONDON TOWN

Mark Knopfler's must be one of the more gentlemanish/polished voices around.(journalistic credentials...no surprise) Though, guess he looked like those fiery english toe crushers of the 80's. (back in the days mate!)
And my liking of him has got nothing to do with his British band (contrary to perception). Infact, i love to hear the Irish speak..I love the Irish accent!
Wish Dire Straits had continued beyond 18...Mark's ambition of going solo ruined it perhaps, (seems to have lost his long locks in the process too) but that doesn't abate its greatness over the last three decades.

                                       Did he leave the building...
or can he come to the phone..
long distance baby-so far from home
                                       calling elvis-i'm here all alone...

And he's up there. What's that? Hawain noises?
Bangin on the bongos like a chimpanzee..
that ain't working...that's the way you do it..

                                                 JULIET!
when we made love you used to cry...
you said i love you like..the stars above, i love you till i die..
There's a place for us..you knooow the movie song...
when you gonna realise that it was just that the time was wrong...Juliet

'coz if you wanna run cool...
                                             if you wanna run cool..
yes if you wanna run cool..
                                             you got to run..
                                             on heavy heavy fuel...

                                Somewhere your fingerprints remain concrete..
and its your face i'm looking for..on every street..

FIVE : WHAT MORE IN THE NAME OF LOVE

Every time i hear Paul Hewson, I'am, in all vicariousness, ascensioned to the countryside towns of Western Europe, reminiscent/horribly nostalgic of the wind chill, empty roads, facade towers, aesthetic cattle farms.
Reminds me of time, trading between Europe, leisure walks at dawn, promenading back to the yard, riveted in scores of U2 jewels on the perpetually desolated streets of Ghent, Milford haven, Rotterdam, Tilbury, Le Havre, Fawley, Skagen. I've perhaps lost the count of the others.
Wish i could get back to countryside Europe soon...wish i could live U2 again...

You led me on with those innocent eyes...
You know i love the element of surprise!

                                                Dug from the night...
your eyes as black as coal....

                                    One day you'll look back
                                    And you'll see...
Where you were held by this love...
                                    While you could stand there..
you could move on this moment, follow this feeling...

                                        Sugar common! show your soul!
Why you keeping your love under control..
Every where you go you shout it..
you don't have to be shy about it...

If I could throw this lifeless lifeline to the wind..
Leave this heart of clay, see you walk, walk away..
into the half-light, and through the flame...

FIVE : FINAL BOARDING CALL...8215...DESTINATION LOS ANGELES

Chad Kroeger has a voice to die for...chilling! God, Him and Me...that must be the order of the greatest voices ever! No!...seriously! No preening!
Its an interesting story on how they got their name..Mike Kroeger, during his job at Starbucks, while giving cash in change to customers would frequently say, "Here's your nickel back"
Remember those myriad long drives with their songs on repeat...lip sync them until perfection..congenial to my imagination!
These aren't my five favorite Nickelback songs 'cause that would simply be too intricate to sift through and neither are they some random selection. Think these are those amazing songs, perhaps a little underrated compared to their other usual suspected hits.

                                         And if you can't tell...
                                         I'am scaaared as hell..
'cause i can't get you on the telephone
                                         so just close your eyes....
oh honey here comes your lullaby..

Every memory of looking out the back door
I had the photo album spread out on my bedroom floor

Keep breathing, 'cause i'am not leaving you anymore..
Believe it, hold onto me and never let me go..

I wish you'd unclench your fists, and unpack your suitcase
Lately there's been too much of this..
but don't think it's too late..

If today was your last day...
Would you make a mark by mending a broken heart..
You know it's never to late to shoot for the stars..
                            regardless of who you are...

More to it Than Meets the Eye : A National Policy of Economic Disillusion

I've lost the count of the number of times I've heard people say, "India is the the third richest country in the world today." I'am not an economics student by far, but i know this statement is holistically vague and my own understanding suggests that there is a lot to be understood about the basis from which the above conclusion could be withdrawn.
The term that first needs to be understood is the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). GDP is the monetary value of all the final goods and services produced (ones that are officially accepted) within the borders of that country in a specific period. There are various methods of calculation of the GDP. The figure thus obtained upon calculation is called the GDP(nominal). This raw figure, is a figure which is not adjusted for different standards of living in different countries. The standard of living in a country depends upon a measure of a lot of factors including poverty rate and inflation adjusted income per person among a host of others. Inflation is the rise in the general level of prices for goods and services in a certain period. It is a measure of annual percentage change in what is known as Consumer Price Index(CPI). CPI is a measure of change in the prices of a defined set of goods and services over a certain period of time. These consumer goods and services classified as household items, personal goods and services and other such categories, together constitute what is known as the Consumer Basket. Therefore, the measure of an overall change in the prices of items, which are within the ambit of the Consumer Basket, is called the CPI. This rate of change in CPI, is known as inflation.
A rise in inflation in-turn means a decrease in Purchasing Power. Purchasing Power is nothing but the number of goods that can be purchased with a unit currency. For example, we all have heard our grandparents talk about the myriad items that could have been bought with a single rupee in hand during their time. Today, a single rupee hardly values anything, indicating that the purchasing power was much higher during their days and has considerably decreased over the period of time.
A rise in inflation therefore means, that every unit currency will buy a smaller percentage of goods. For example, if the inflation rate is 5%, then a 10 rupee wafer packet will cost Rs. 10.05 in a year.
Coming back to GDP, therefore, the obtained figure of GDP(nominal), will appear higher than what the real GDP actually is. For example, if the GDP growth in a year is 8% and the rate of inflation is 4%, then even though the GDP(nominal) figure would be calculated at 8% growth, the real growth in GDP will only be 4%. India ranks 9th among the 183 member countries of the International Monetary Fund(IMF) in the GDP(nominal) list of 2011.
Now the GDP figure estimates derived from the Purchasing Power Parity calculations is called the GDP(Purchasing Power Parity) figures. The theory of Purchasing Power Parity estimates the amount of adjustment needed on the rate of exchange between countries in order for the exchange to be equivalent to each currency's purchasing power. For example, a pack of cigarettes that sells for Rs.10 in New Delhi should cost US$ 1.00 in a U.S. city when the exchange rate between India and U.S. is 10 USD/INR(Both packs cost U.S.$ 1.00). As per the IMF list of 2011 for GDP(PPP) figures, India is ranked third among the 183 member countries of the IMF.
This information when looked at, within the ambit of its own existence, makes one believe that Indians are among the richest people of the world. However, its only when one looks at the GDP at PPP per capita figures, does one get a better understanding of the standard of living of an average Indian and the wide disparity among the 2 Indias that exist today.
GDP(PPP) per capita is obtained by dividing the GDP figure by the number of people in the country. This figure particularly useful as it helps in comparing relative performances between countries. Here, India ranks abysmally low, at 127th position, among the 183 member countries of the IMF (2011 figures).
A rise in per capita GDP signals growth in economy. A higher per capita GDP is interpreted as having a higher standard of living. So after 60 years of independence, the indication of the standard of living of an average Indian citizen is quite comprehensible. The policies of the Indian Government have been such that the wealth keeps getting accumulated in the hands of the ones who already hold its possession. Therefore, the gap between the affluent and the impoverished is widening by the day. India is getting richer, but Indians, so to speak, aren't. And this is where, as of today, India stands and not where some vague vignettes project it to. Figures themselves as such, do not mislead. It is us, who make them mislead.

'Make Some Noise for the Delhi Boyz'

There are no prizes for guessing the addresses of rockstars this IPL season-5. It's right here, at latitude 28.6 degrees North, the vibrant city of New Delhi. Just the mere presence of Munde Dilli Ke, is enough to send a chill down the opposition's spine. When as an opposition you see the duo of Viru and Warner walking out of the dressing room, with their bats in their hands, and (as if this wasn't enough intimidating) a glance at the scoreboard makes you aware of the one's to follow....ever-so-reliable Mahela, the dominating Ross, 'Delhi's New Son, Peitersen' and the exciting Andre Russell, who on earth would want to hold the ball in his hand!
This team, (season 5) truely reflects what Delhi has always been known for, daredevilry!

VIRU : The Nawab of Delhi. The man has always lived by the edge of the sword. The faster you ball at him, the faster you see the ball disappearing over the ropes. The man doesnt have the word FEAR in his dictionary. The opposition though are aware of the word FEAR very well. It's called VIRU!

KP: The tall swashbuckler. He's the big stage player. Bigger the stage bigger are his hits. He's the one who not only started what he calls as palti hit, but hits them for sixes too!. If he gets going for for Delhi Daredevils, even a squad of 15 on field would be too less to stop him.

WARNER : A lot of people say he hits sixes. Well, iam sorry, he not only just hits sixes, he miss-hits them too! An extremely strong bloke, packs a punch on the field. Carrying forward the legacy of palti hits from KP!

MAHELA : A man with a thousand gears and an astute cricketing brain. He's Delhi Daredevils' versatility man. He is the aggressor one day and the anchor on another.

ROSS : When you see Ross walking onto the filed, as an opposition, you immediately know you are up against something ferocious. The bowler with his shivering legs is a common sight when Ross is on strike. The Kiwi skipper is renowned for plonking the ball to the nearby parking lots and hotel rooftops!

ANDRE RUSSELL : If you thought Kieron Pollard was dangerous, well then Andre Russell is deadly. Those who have been following him for long know that you can take him lightly, only at your own peril. One of the exciting additions to have happened to Daredevils!

And when put together with the in-form Irfan Pathan, the super fast Umesh Yadav, hit-the-deck-hard Morne Morkel and others, this is one team this season which is going to be dangerously exciting!
So its time for all Delhi Daredevils' lovers to pull their jerseys out, gulp down the throat syrups, paint the faces red and blue and get ready to MAKE SOME NOISE FOR OUR DELHI BOYS!  hero shero ban ke, chaati dole tan ke, khelein jam jam ke, delhi boyz!

Hostility or Hospitality

It hurts me to see the growing insensitivity among Indians. People have become more than willing to thrash, stab, shoot, denounce for the slightest provocation. I know i can say this without much doubts over my credentials that most of the world, especially the western civilized world, views Indians as apathetic and intolerant bunch of blokes driven by hostility towards each other. For a country, who's catalyst for achieving independence was non violence and who's history is an example of benevolent hospitality(atithi devo bhava), it's rather shocking to see this insidious transition.
I'am someone who is selectively gregarious. I'am fond of being in the company of people who are not only intellectually aware, but are opinionated and articulate. I can actually sit all day long in such company over myriad cups of coffee.
I'am in know of certain individuals/acquaintances who are very fervently aware of Shah Rukh Khan's earning per film or Angelina Jolie's latest release or Kim Kardashian's stupid histrionics, but when asked about Syrian uprising or the impact of Tehran-Tel Aviv conflict or the prospects of 2014 general elections, comes an old stale response, " Iam not interested in politics. Its dirty." Iam not someone who gets cranky easily anymore, but such an attitude is one among a few things that still gets me squeamish.
Politics or power tussle, may or may not be dirty, but whatever it may be, at least  it is for real. Everything that people like Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika and company do is all fake and the irony is that we appreciate them for being the best in being fake. Such are the individuals, who unfortunately, are worshiped and idolized in this country.
I was discussing the intolerant mindset of Indians with one of my friends the other day and after coming up with various theories which couldn't hold ground upon being challenged, we thought that the problem is not as intrinsic to the Indian race as it is to the Indian administrative society.
In a society, if justice for a common man is scarce to find, it will lead to intolerance and hostility. If in a society public interests are sacrificed for individual interests and political gains, then there is injustice in that society. Such an injustice in the society will lead to massive unequal distribution of wealth and unequal opportunities among its citizens. Such an inequality between citizens will lead to corruption, unrest, intolerance and chaos. And in such a society, if the law takes no less than 15 years to deliver justice, it shouls be considered to be no justice at all.
The dysfunctional democracy has no doubt contributed to the increase in the intolerance levels among Indians, but there is no shying away from the fact that Indians, prima facie, have become more intolerant, vis-a-vis the pre-independence era. Forcing M.F.Hussain out of the country or denying Salman Rushdie entry into the country are minute such examples when uglier things have been said and done. For once, Indians should look at the transition from being a developing country to a developed country on being broad minded and largehearted instead of concentrating on amassing wealth.

Anecdotes of perpetual volatilities : 'Your 9/11 is their 24x7'

After years of bonhomie, Americans are now coming to terms with the colluder that Pakistan has been. In the garb of being victims of home grown wolves who turned rouge, it has continued with its malevolent histrionics. The problem is that neither does Pakistan's interests coincide with those of its immediate neighbours, nor are they congenial with the western world. Today, it stands battered, bleeding and bruised and it only has its own misadventures to blame for it.
Not contented with their demarcated boundaries, combined with rumours of the Hindu ruler of the Muslim dominated Kashmir leaning towards India, Pakistan, immediately after independence, hurtled an invasion from Muslim revolutionaries and Pakistani tribesmen into Kashmir(though the Hindu ruler was flirting with the idea of staying independent). Fearing servitude in the hands of the bestial Pakistan establishment, the Kashmiri czar acceded to India, which sent its troops and stopped the illegal occupation of its neighbour over the restive state.
At a time when India was still smarting from the wounds inflicted in 1965 by China, Pakistan, seeing India at its weakest, infiltrated its troops into the Indian administered Kashmir. Indians, oblivious as they were, were caught napping. They were alerted of this mischief by the local Kashmiris, and the Indian army sprung into action and dragged the Pakistanis back into the Western Punjab and Sindh.
For the initial years after independence, not only was the movement of people across the borders free, but the two countries also shared the same currency. But it was here, after this incident, when India realised it had had enough of putting faith in Pakistan and that from here on, it shall not trust its western neighbour again.
India's support for Bangladesh's war of independence is a classic example of the fact that if you keep incessantly throwing stones at others, you would not receive flowers in return. Since 1947, it was not possible for Western Pakistan to have supported its eastern counterpart militarily, in case of an armed conflict with India. But India never interfered with Pakistan's internal matters despite widespread exodus of Bangladeshis into India caused due to extreme cruelty and indignation by Punjabi and Sindhi rulers towards their Bengali counterparts, until in 1971, when  India had had enough and the trust between the two countries was at its lowest ebb.
Pakistan's fortunes changed for the better when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Americans were clearly unhappy with the development as they saw this as an abatement of their influence in the region. It was perhaps for this day that Pakistan, since independence, had been fed on American payroll and cheques. With the help of Pakistan, CIA created the 'Son of the soil', Osama Bin Laden and its protege, to fight its war in Afghanistan, against the Soviets. The Americans eventually won and the Soviets were ousted from Afghanistan. Pakistan was buoyed by this success. If jihad can compel the mighty Soviets out of Afghanistan, it would certainly coerce the Indians to give up its claim on Kashmir. Pakistan, thus, inconspicuously, developed itself into a sanctuary where religiously fervent men from Central Asia, Western Asia and similar regions were indoctrinated and trained for the hallowed war against what they considered as Zionists occupation of Muslim lands all over the world, which included Kashmir. What thus followed, was an unleashing of unprecedented killings and blood spillage in state of Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere in India, which included Kargil infiltration and Indian Airlines flight, IC 814 high jacking, the most recent one being the Mumbai 26//11 attacks in 2008, which the whole world viewed live on their television sets.
A lot of people argue that it is the Americans which are to be blamed for what Osama eventually turned out to be. Yes, Americans did create Osama, but it was Pakistan which raised, fed and nurtured him, Taliban and their ideology, motivated to suit their own unholy desires.
Today, Pakistan, has luridly, turned into an abattoir, where the society is on the verge of a complete crumple, the source of its virtue is great bitterness and malice, sectarian violence is reaching its pinnacle and attacks of the magnitude of 9/11 are being perpetrated 24x7. It talks about being the biggest victim of terror, but in reality, its own history of indulgence in preposterous activities are now turning up on its face. Like how US Secretary of State, Mrs. Hillary Clinton had very rightly put Pakistan's case, ' You can't keep snakes in your backyard and expect it to only bite neighbours' (sic)
Matters of public importance, in Pakistan, unfortunately, have been disillusioned with those of the administration's and the army's. I hope situation in Pakistan improves and they realize that societies are build on affection and endearment and not on bile and resentment. But its difficult to see that happening in a country, where children aren't still raised on lullabies, but on misinterpreted verses of the holy Quran.
